Vintage 1930’s Red & Gold Foil Glass Beads

This is a rare necklace and in excellent condition!

Fully knotted on red silk thread, these 1930’s red and gold foil glass beads are a rare colour and quality and are sometimes called mock fire opals because they were designed to look like them.

Each bead has been made by pressing gold foil sheet fragments into the smoky and cherry red Vaseline glass, before forming the final eye-shaped oval beads, making a warm glowing colour that shines in different lights; and all before the glass cools. These are traditionally Italian by manufacture and each bead is blown individually, so they are all unique.

The foil beads are graduated in size from 10mm to 20mm at the front.  The necklace is long and measures 58cm (23 inches) The foil beads are spaced with round faceted red garnets.  There are 25 foil beads.

The clasp is the original brass barrel screw and the necklace is in excellent vintage condition.  There is no visible damage to the beads and all occlusions and swirls are part of the original glass-blowing technique, during their manufacture.

A simply stunning, rare vintage piece!

The necklace is sold with two pairs of matching earrings.  A drop pair on gold-plated hook-backs for pierced ears, using matching beads from the necklace and, an original rare vintage red foil glass clip-on set, which are an excellent match.
